And he said to them, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” And they stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?” And he said to them, “What things?” And they said to him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened. Moreover, some women of our company amazed us. They were at the tomb early in the morning, and when they did not find his body, they came back saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but him they did not see.” And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Nineveh was still a distance from this shoreline, so Jonah had to walk on foot until he completed his journey. God instructed Jonah to go to the great city and preach repentance to the people, who were known to be ruthless and cruel. The crafty serpent tricked Eve by casting doubt on God’s character, essentially calling God a liar, and told them surely they would not die. Adam and Eve chose to believe the lie instead of God. When God asked Adam what he had done, he blamed it on his wife, who in turn blamed it on the serpent, Satan. This state of separation from God had greater consequences than this first couple could have imagined at the time. They were driven out of the Garden, which is depicted here as Creation now in chaos. All the way back in Genesis where we see the fall of Adam, thus of all mankind, we see a humanity now separated from God. The people also became terrified, at one point referring sarcastically to all the Egyptian graves and pyramids saying, “Were there not enough graves in Egypt that you brought us out here to die in this wilderness?” Because they didn’t believe God fully, Moses and the Israelites wandered in circles in the desert for 40 long years until that entire generation died, except for the faithful two men, Joshua and Caleb, who became the next leaders.

This crossing of the Jordan river differs from the Crossing of the Red Sea in many ways. During the Red Sea crossing, it was recorded that there was a wall of water to the right and left of the people. However, during this Jordan crossing, the water was stopped a long distance away from where the people crossed. In Crossing the Red Sea, the people left as slaves, with images of their shackles on the ground. In Crossing the Jordan, instead of terrified slaves, we see equipped warriors, with singers and musicians carrying the Word of God, the Law, into the new land they were about to occupy. Pages from the book scatter in the sky, depicting their duty and calling by God to distribute His righteous Law throughout the new land, which would also serve as a testimony against the lawlessness of the inhabitants.

The Jordan River flows at the bottom of a deep valley between two, sometimes three ledges, and the water is ordinarily less than 100 feet wide. The banks are overgrown with trees, and in the spring the water overflows these banks. Occasionally the rising water can fill the ravine to the brim, making the waters extremely treacherous to cross, as it was filled to the brim at this time. The spies who had crossed into the land alone, strong young men, could swim across, but this would have been impossible for the entire nation. And unlike when the people crossed the Red Sea, the waters were not already parted. This time the priests carried the ark of the covenant which contained the 10 commandment tablets and passed before the rest of the people. The dangerous waters began to part only as the priests’ feet touched the waters. The entire nation of people crossed over on dry land and arrived just outside the great walled city of Jericho which would be their first conquest.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0254/0381/8066/products/CROSSING_THE_JORDAN_40x60_d7a18a54-eebc-470e-8758-cd721b69abc1.JPG?v=1565647682
wisdom-and-narcissism-archival-paper-giclees
Wisdom and Narcissism Archival Paper Giclees

Wisdom and Narcissism Archival Paper Giclees

by Rosemarie Adcock

The painting by Rosemarie Adcock is an allegory of wisdom and narcissism, a theme addressed throughout the Book of Proverbs. Likewise, when Jesus returns, the Bible describes Him meeting His bride in the air to take her back to His Father, to Heaven, where the great Marriage Supper will someday take place, when all believers, referred to as His bride, will be taken into the presence of God to celebrate with joy.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0254/0381/8066/files/Marriage_Supper_Home_Viewing-v2-50_-60.jpg?v=1759435608
joseph-and-his-brothers-archival-paper-giclees
Joseph and His Brothers Archival Paper Giclees

Joseph and His Brothers

Archival Paper Giclees

Joseph was a direct descendant of Abraham. Given an opportunity, they threw Joseph into a pit and sold him for 20 pieces of silver to slave traders who were on their way to Egypt. God raised up Moses, who would lead the slaves in a great Exodus out of Egypt. There were plagues that God brought upon the Egyptians, ending finally with the death of every firstborn male, both people and animals. It was the final, terrifying plague that convinced the Egyptians to release the Hebrew slaves. The Hebrews were protected by sacrificing a lamb and placing the blood on the lintel of the doorways of their homes. An angel of death would “pass over” their households leaving them unharmed, but anyone who did not observe the “Passover” lost a firstborn male. This Passover was to be observed throughout their generations. The story comes from the Book of Daniel, Chapter 5, occurring late in Daniel's life, when he was nearly a forgotten man. The king Belshazzar had a wild feast for 1,000 guests. He ordered all the gold vessels used for worship to be brought to him, and he and the guests continued their drunken party.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, there was a large hand that appeared, that wrote an inscription onto the wall. The words in the painting are written in Hebrew, although it is unknown what language they were actually written in. Today we are unsure why.

The terrified king summoned his magicians, painted with a Merlin Falcon on the shoulder of one, but they were unable to interpret the meaning of the words. The king's wife reminded him about the aging prophet, Daniel, who was summoned with the hope he could interpret the writing. Daniel is at the right in the painting, with the dove on his shoulder, holding a book that is symbolic of his words becoming part of the Bible. The king then offered Daniel wealth and position if he could solve the mystery. Daniel refused the gifts, but interpreted the writing, "Weighted. Weighted. Found Lacking." These words felt so striking to me, because this judgement had already been decided before it was even announced. No chance left for mercy. No begging. No tears would change God's plan about what was to happen next.

The wall around Babylon was virtually impenetrable, so the king and guests would have felt secure in their party. It is thought that even while Daniel was speaking, it was likely the Persian invaders were already secretly entering the city through dry aqueducts. King Belshazzar was overthrown, and dead that very night.

As I painted this piece, I was reminded how leaders of any nation are held to high account by God, in ancient times as well as contemporary times. God's standards never change, because He doesn't change.
