God raised up Moses, who would lead the slaves in a great Exodus out of Egypt. There were plagues that God brought upon the Egyptians, ending finally with the death of every firstborn male, both people and animals. It was the final, terrifying plague that convinced the Egyptians to release the Hebrew slaves. The Hebrews were protected by sacrificing a lamb and placing the blood on the lintel of the doorways of their homes. An angel of death would “pass over” their households leaving them unharmed, but anyone who did not observe the “Passover” lost a firstborn male. This Passover was to be observed throughout their generations. Once again, this was a symbol of Jesus who was to come, who was called the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

By the miraculous parting of the waters of the Red Sea, the people crossed over on dry land as the waters parted like a wall on either side of them, to the right and to the left. However, when the pursuing Egyptian army tried to do the same thing, the waters came back upon them and they all drowned.

The 4 people are passing the standing waters on dry ground with various types of fish swimming in the wall of water behind them. The chains of their slavery lie on the ground to the left. The figure furthest to the left looks back at the Egyptians who are in pursuit. The second figure delights at the fish staring at him and pokes his finger into the standing wall of water. The third figure, representing doubt, hasn’t quite grasped the idea that the waters of the Red Sea have parted for her to cross, yet she's not drowning. The figure furthest to the right represents people of faith and courage as she dances with the fruit of the Promised Land in her arms, the promise awaiting after the Red Sea is crossed by the entire nation.

This painting received an award on exhibition at the Museum of Art, Florida.

Noah and the Animals Before the Great Flood

Archival Canvas Giclee

by Rosemarie Adcock

In the book of Genesis, God saw that “the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.” God decided to blot out His creation with a great flood because the earth was filled with violence, but a man named Noah found favor in His eyes.

Noah was told by God to build an ark in preparation for the flood that would cover the entire surface of the earth, giving him exact instructions as to the composition and measurements of the vessel. The wilted and drying rose hints at the length of the journey, yet the facial expression is one of peace, implied by the Greek word in the golden letters, which is written as the name on the boat. The Greek word for Endurance is not the way we often think of enduring, in other words, tolerating or putting up with something. In one of the most famous verses in Micah 6, God declares His pleasure is not in spectacular wealth and offerings we might bring him as if to pay for our wrongdoings, but instead Micah declares that God has indeed declared what he desires and it isn’t complicated; we are to display His very character:

"Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Without her own strength to stand, she supports herself by wrapping her hands around his arms as he begins to lift her. The woman is depicted as one poor in spirit, rather than poor in earthly goods. This crossing of a body of water differs from the Crossing of the Red Sea in many ways. During the Red Sea crossing, it was recorded that there was a wall of water to the right and left of the people, depicted with a wall of fish in my Crossing the Red Sea painting. During this Jordan crossing, the water was stopped a long distance away from where the people crossed. In Red Sea, the people left as slaves, with images of their shackles on the ground. In Crossing the Jordan, we do not see terrified slaves, but instead, equipped warriors, singers and musicians carrying the Word of God, into their promised new land. Pages from the book scatter in the sky, depicting God's word being distributed throughout the new lands.

The Jordan River flows at the bottom of a deep valley between two, sometimes three ledges, and the water is ordinarily less than 100 feet wide. The banks are overgrown with trees, and in the spring, the water overflows these banks. Occasionally the rising water can fill the ravine to the brim, making the waters extremely treacherous to cross, as it was at this time. The spies who had crossed into the land alone, strong young men, could swim across, but this would have been impossible for the entire nation. And unlike when all the people crossed the Red Sea, the waters were not already parted. This time the priests carried the ark of the covenant which contained the 10 commandment tablets, and passed before the rest of the people. The dangerous waters began to part only as the priests’ feet touched the waters. What courage! The entire nation of people crossed over on dry land and arrived just outside the great walled city of Jericho, where God miraculously caused the walls to fall down flat.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0254/0381/8066/products/CROSSING_THE_JORDAN_40x60_c0f022c2-a9c1-406a-be69-d021b37f935d.JPG?v=1565484992
joseph-and-his-brothers-giclees
Joseph and His Brothers Archival Canvas Giclees

Joseph and His Brothers

Archival Canvas Giclees

Joseph was a direct descendant of Abraham. As a boy, Joseph was favored by his father Jacob in such a way that his brothers hated him. Given an opportunity, they threw Joseph into a pit and sold him for 20 pieces of silver to slave traders who were on their way to Egypt. Joseph interpreted both dreams, saying that God was warning that 7 years of great abundance would come to Egypt, followed by 7 years of the worst famine they ever knew, and instructed Pharaoh how to prepare. Pharaoh, seeing that God had blessed Joseph with great wisdom, appointed him as the ruler second in power so that the people might survive the great famine.

As the famine spread, Joseph’s brothers eventually travelled to Egypt for food so they wouldn’t starve. When the couple became engaged, the groom went to the house of the bride to ask her father for her hand in marriage; but this time the groom meets the bride in the street, not all the way to her home, and takes her back to the father’s house where the wedding feast was to take place. Likewise, when Jesus returns, the Bible describes Him meeting His bride in the air to take her back to His Father, to Heaven, where the great Marriage Supper will someday take place, when all believers, referred to as His bride, will be taken into the presence of God to celebrate with joy.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0254/0381/8066/files/Marriage_Supper_Home_Viewing-v2-50_-60.jpg?v=1759435608
ruth-and-the-barley-harvest-giclees
Ruth and the Barley Harvest Archival Canvas Giclees

Ruth and the Barley Harvest

Archival Canvas Giclees

by Rosemarie Adcock

The story of Ruth (c. 1140 BC) occurs during the period of the Judges, aptly described by the writer of the Book as a time when “Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.”

The widow Ruth, a Moabitess, came with her widowed mother-in-law back to Israel after the death of their husbands. The people also became terrified, at one point referring sarcastically to all the Egyptian graves and pyramids saying, “Were there not enough graves in Egypt that you brought us out here to die in this wilderness?” Because they didn’t believe God fully, Moses and the Israelites wandered in circles in the desert for 40 long years until that entire generation died, except for the faithful two men, Joshua and Caleb, who became the next leaders.

This crossing of the Jordan river differs from the Crossing of the Red Sea in many ways. During the Red Sea crossing, it was recorded that there was a wall of water to the right and left of the people. However, during this Jordan crossing, the water was stopped a long distance away from where the people crossed. In Crossing the Red Sea, the people left as slaves, with images of their shackles on the ground. In Crossing the Jordan, instead of terrified slaves, we see equipped warriors, with singers and musicians carrying the Word of God, the Law, into the new land they were about to occupy. Pages from the book scatter in the sky, depicting their duty and calling by God to distribute His righteous Law throughout the new land, which would also serve as a testimony against the lawlessness of the inhabitants.

The Jordan River flows at the bottom of a deep valley between two, sometimes three ledges, and the water is ordinarily less than 100 feet wide. The banks are overgrown with trees, and in the spring the water overflows these banks. Occasionally the rising water can fill the ravine to the brim, making the waters extremely treacherous to cross, as it was filled to the brim at this time. The spies who had crossed into the land alone, strong young men, could swim across, but this would have been impossible for the entire nation. And unlike when the people crossed the Red Sea, the waters were not already parted. This time the priests carried the ark of the covenant which contained the 10 commandment tablets and passed before the rest of the people. The dangerous waters began to part only as the priests’ feet touched the waters. The entire nation of people crossed over on dry land and arrived just outside the great walled city of Jericho which would be their first conquest.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0254/0381/8066/products/CROSSING_THE_JORDAN_40x60_d7a18a54-eebc-470e-8758-cd721b69abc1.JPG?v=1565647682
crossing-the-red-sea-note-cards
Crossing the Red Sea Note Cards

Crossing the Red Sea Note Cards

by Rosemarie Adcock

Crossing the Red Sea by Rosemarie Adcock depicts the Exodus led by Moses, and the miraculous parting of the waters of the Red Sea. Jonah was instructed by God to go to the great city and preach repentance to the people, who were known to be ruthless and cruel. Wanting that these evil people should be judged and destroyed rather than they have an opportunity for God to forgive them, Jonah refused to go to Nineveh, and instead paid the fare for a ship sailing in the other direction to Tarshish. This man was called by God to leave his family and go to a place that God was to show him, difficult enough to be far from family and friends, but certainly more so in ancient times without the assurance of basic food and water. Abraham was a wealthy man, but for all his wealth the one thing he didn't have was a child, even though God had spoken to him of having many descendants. In his old age, when all hope was long gone, finally, by a miracle, a son Isaac was born to him and his aging wife.

The day came that God instructed Abraham to sacrifice the young man, an unthinkable act practiced by the pagans of his ancient culture, yet in utter obedience (likely in complete horror) Abraham prepared to do exactly that, knife raised, until an angel stopped him and declared he shouldn't harm the boy. In that very moment, Abraham saw that there was a ram caught in some branches, which was to be the sacrifice God provided in place of the precious son Isaac.

The artist chose to call the painting The Restoration of Isaac because essentially, in the mind of the father, the boy was already sacrificed; the decision had been made to give him up; he was willing to give up everything and anything God required of him. The part of this story that has always been so precious to me is the part that speaks of God's faithfulness to us even today, the restoration of the very thing we gave up on, the thing truly dead to us, brought back to life.
